Bored at work, I surfed over to sb.catacombs.com. They have a character builder over there like the DaoC ones. These seem to tell me more about a class than a website description does. So I compiled a short list of abilities these classes get. You choose a class at 5 (Rogue, mage, fighter, healer) and a subclass at 10 (Bard, Mage, Assassin, etc.).

To each of these subclasses you can add Disciplines which may also give you ability to train in a skill. For example a Scout class can acquire the Archer Discipline, which allows you to use a bow (including bow styles a la DaoC). The Ranger class gets Bow training for free. You can have up to three disciplines. Your subclass determines disciplines you can buy. So a Templar can buy Commander but a Warrior can buy Werebear.

Fighter Subclasses
--------------
Barbarian: Axe, bow, hammer, dagger, polearm, shield, sword, light armor, medium armor, Access to Storm Lord, Berserker Disciplines

Crusader: polearms, axe, sword, dagger, hammer, shield, Medium armor, light armor, Access to Werewolf, Commander disciplines (? weird class)

Huntress: Axe, bow, hammer, dagger, polearm, shield, sword, summon pet, buff dex, buff str, heal pet, self runspeed, buff con, buff pet str/con, DD+snare, light armor, medium armor

Ranger: Axe, bow, hammer, dagger, polearm, shield, sword. (Why take this class over huntress? Access to more Disciplines, like Wyrmslayer, Ratcatcher, and Sun Dancer. No clue what these do.)

Templar: Axe, hammer, dagger, polearm, shield, sword, Heavy, medium, light armors, DoT, smite undead, Dex debuff, str debuff, snare+disease+DoT, fire resist buff, personal fire shield. Access to Commander and Dark Knight disciplines. (Now that's a fkin pallie build.)

Warlock: All the melee skills, no magic skills listed. Bug? Guess would be it's a fighter/melee hybrid. We all know how viable hybrids are in MMORPGs.

Warrior: Melee skills, Access to werebear and werewolf disciplines

Rogue Subclasses
-----------------------
Assassins: Melee skills, stealth, snares, stuns, insta nuke, poison weapon buff, self buff cold/AF,  blind target, buff poison resistance. Access to Wererat, Ratcatcher, Black Mask.

Bards: Dagger, Sword, staff, mezz, AE mezz, DD+stun, runspeed, single target detaunt (kinda cool, sounds like you cast this on your healer to reduce his aggro), charm (minstrel pet), group HoT, group damage add, PB AE DoT, light armor. Access to Commander, Dark Knight, Wyrmslayer, lots more. ffs nice class!

Barbarians, Huntresses are listed here and in Fighter class. They get some different stuff in the Rogue base than Fighter base. Confusing!

Scout: Dagger, staff, sword, light armor, Access to Runecaster, Archer, Black Mask

Thief: dagger, staff, sword, light armor, Access to Commander, Wererat, ratcatcher, Bounty Hunter

Healer subclasses

Channeler: Hammer, shield, staff, Heal, rez, DD+snare, DD+stun, DoT, Buff AF, Con, Dex, Summon. Access to Animator, Summoner, Commander, Runecaster

Confessor: Hammer, shield, staff, heal, rez, buff af, con, dex, Summon. Access to Commander, Knight, Undead Hunter.

Crusader: Hammer, shield, staff, heal, rez, buff af, con, dex, Summon. Again, weird class, totally different abilities in healer master class.

Druid: Hammer, staff, shield, Root, damage shield, stun, heals, buff all, resist poison and disease, Summon, Access to all wereforms

Prelate: Hammer, staff, shield, buffs, heals, rez, Access to Summoner, Runecaster, Commander.

Priest: Hammer, staff, shield, buffs, heals, rez, group runspeed, summon, haste attackspeed buff, self damage buff, cure poison, cure disease, root, stun, AE stun, amnesia, single target mana recovery buff, AE mezz. Holy crap!! They're like mid healers and hib bards in one. Access to Commander, Summoner

Mage subclasses

Assassins: Melee skills, stealth, snares, stun, nuke, poison weapon buff, self buff cold/AF,  blind target, buff poison resistance, cure poison, snare+DoT, str debuff, Magic reflection sheild. Access to Wererat, Ratcatcher, Black Mask.

Bards: Dagger, Sword, staff, mezz, AE mezz, DD+stun, runspeed, single target detaunt,  charm (minstrel pet), group HoT, group damage add, PB AE DoT, root, magic reflection shieldbuff AF. Access to Commander, Dark Knight, Wyrmslayer, lots more. ffs nice class!

Channeler:

OK, got tired of doing this. There's also Fury, Wizard, Warlock left in this class.

This was sorta the way I thought DAoC would be when I first started playing. I didn't realize choosing "rogue" at the beginning limited me to only 3 profession choices and that being a scout was a huge difference from being an inf or a minstrel. I figured scout's had bow, infs had CS and minstrels has music but other than that, they basically had  the same capabilities in melee and stealth.

So what is shadowbane anyway? Like a clone of DAoC with a better class system?

Zut: From what I hear so far, it's a buggy, crash-prone gankfest. A few weeks ago in their beta they were still having server load problems and the servers would crash with just two hundred people playing. I'm sure they've perfected their code by now.

They love me there. The guy next to me started same day I did. He shows up at 1130 and goes to lunch at noon, back around 2 and leaves around 330. He took Thursday off "to ride his motorcycle." He spent Friday "installing Windows Office." (Not sure he finished). He missed our 9am status meeting and every other meeting he's been invited to so far.

I'm the database admin for a company with vertical market apps. The app I'm on now lets companies spy on employee email, and archives every mail sent in or out of the company for three years. Pretty creepy. Also lets you search for phrases like "nice ass." Litigation support.

That's probably one of the most disturbing things I've heard from the IT world in a while.  Even more so than monitoring my internet.  

We technically have the same thing here, in the form of backups for the Exchange server, but fortunately, its a pain for our Network Admin to go through them.
