Anyone playing one or played one recently that they could recommend?

Axecleaver

I played Wizardry 8 recently. Older game, but I always liked the Wizardry series. Very flexible, so you can have 1 char or a full party and the combat system adjusts to make it challenging.

The only thing that bugged me a little bit was that monsters also increased in difficulty as you levelled, so there was no chance to go back through easy areas and not have to fight tooth and nail all the way through.

Fallout was good, too. Maybe I should play something made in the last three years, though.

Caohmin

I've heard good things about both those games. I'll check them out; thanks Axe.

I bought Fallout 1 & 2 from amazon for just over 20 bucks; Wizardry 8 was 57 bucks and up. Which I thought was kinda high for a game that came out a few years ago, lol.

Rosslyn

holy crap, yeah.

what's fallout like?  i've never tried that one.

Sodom

Strangely enough, I was thinking about picking up Fallout, as it's a game I've never actually played. Heck, I was thinking of playing through Wasteland again, but I worry that it can't live up to my memories of playing through it on the Apple2c

Rosslyn

I think I played Wasteland on an old Tandy PC we had for a while.  It had dual 5.25" drives, so it was sweet.

I ended up reading up on Fallout online, seems pretty cool.  I went to eBay and picked up a combo pack for $20 that had Fallout, Fallout 2, and Fallout Tactics.  Hopefully it shows up soon, I'm anxious to try it out.

I played Wasteland on a C-64. I loved that game and probably spent 100 hours on it with a few different team builds, using the "disk swap trick" to avoid losing members of my team... no res spells! I can still remember some of the engaging puzzle content, like telling the waitress URAQTLN, breaking through the skylight and fighting Ugly the gangster. Las Vegas and the badass scorpion robot. The church with all the radioactive people.

I think Wasteland is find-able on the web as abandonware, though it has some annoying copy protection checks in the game.

Fallout was the sequel, made many years later. It lets you choose turn-based or realtime combat, though I always used turn based. The combat was a lot of fun. It gave characters with high INT more dialogue choices, so really dumb characters had a hard time talking their way through things, and made different builds viable and a truly different game experience. The game mechanics are really cool, I believe it's based on a Steve Jackson design or something. The main mission is timed, and events occur based on a clock, so if you dick around too much things can get a little screwy. Keep some old saves around.

Fallout 2 was a little too long for my tastes. I never finished it. Very buggy although I think the patches eventually resolved most problems. It suffered from a bit of an unfocused story line and I didn't enjoy it nearly as much as Fallout.

Fallout Tactics was basically tactical combat missions with a mercenary team, a la X-Com. Lot of fun although very time consuming to make any progress. I never got more than 10% of the way through it.

I bought most of these games for exorbitant release prices when they came out. What a sucker! I could've waited 10 years and got them all for $20.

Another tactical game I really liked was Jagged Alliance.

I have Wizardry 8 at hom Cao.  I wonder if the wife can find it and mail the disc to you...

Caohmin

Heh, you may want to ebay it; sounds like you're sitting on a goldmine!

Thanks for the offer. I'm going to play the Fallout games and see how that goes. I may hit you up for it in a month or so. Just looking for something different to play for a bit.

In other news: Got the Age of Conan newsletter today. I'm itching to hook up with you guys in a new game.

Pesadilla

Fallout was AWSOME.. i have to go back every year or so to replay them

Rosslyn

yeah, I got that newsletter too, although i had to snicker when I saw the contest was labeled as the "february newsletter" contest or something and you had to have your e-mails in to them by the end of March to qualify for some free cheesy loot.  hehe, whoops!

in all seriousness though, I can't wait for that game.  Last I heard they were still pushing for a late October release.  Has anyone heard anything different recently?

Caohmin

The screenshots of the all the blood splattering and heads being lopped off look pretty cool. I need to finish putting together my new system...

3rd quarter was last I heard as well, but you know how these things go. I'd be happy if they got it out before year-end.

Found an online system requirement checker:

Pick Age of Conan from the drop-down box.

Rosslyn

finally got fallout today in the mail, hehe.  fooled around with it a little bit, not too bad.  it's kind of refreshing that some of the stuff you can get to fairly early is NOT stuff you should be messing with.  lol, good thing I've been liberal about saving my game.
