Tydd

Just wanted to say hello.

'Heeellllooooo.  Is it me your looking for?' lalalalalal

Caohmin

How about a 'latest and greatest' review of SWG, Tydd?

Tydd

I found a rather accurate review.  I'll see if I can find it again and post it.

Caohmin

Thanks for that, Tydd. After reading that review and this post from Bob Perez (aka Father Domenic; some of you old-timers might remember that name) I'm going to wait a bit more before taking the plunge. Apparently, the character delete function is not working properly and people's main characters are being deleted by some bug. SWG has a one character per server rule, so people try other characters on other servers. When they go to delete these other characters, somehow their main character gets deleted.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
I just read an amazing thread on the forums, posted by one of the customer
representatives. Here's the text of his message:

**************************

Howdy all,

We have become aware of some players having their main character deleted
when trying to delete other characters. There is a fix on the way that needs
to be tested (at most, over the weekend). Our main concern is preventing
this from happening to more people. So...

PLEASE DO NOT DELETE ANY CHARACTERS (even lesser ones) UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.

It shouldn't take long so please bear with us.

***************************

What is happening is that because of the single character per server (SCS)
rule, people who want to try out a different profession (or who can't log
into their chosen server) head off to another server and create alternate
minor characters. At some point, for whatever reason, they decide to delete
one of these alternates and instead their main character on their original
server is deleted. You can imagine what ensues at that point as they
discover that their original character was deleted and they then start to
try and get resolution. Very ugly.

When I read this I thought to myself that a better solution might be to
immediately issue a patch that warns people NOT to delete characters or even
just disable deletion altogether. At LEAST post something on the public
launchpad where everyone logging in can see it. Posting a message in the
forum might get the attention of a few people, but it's hardly likely to
reach the hundreds of thousands of casual players who will never visit the
forum (or this newsgroup). The message was posted on Friday July 18 at 6pm
and I just this morning saw it for the first time and only after paging to
Page 2 of the message list. How many players are going to do that? This
seems a really bad way to handle something so serious (and what could be
more serious than irrevocable deletion of your main character on a SCS
server)? I read several posts from people who had lost their characters this
way and the indication they had received from Customer Support was that Sony
has no way of restoring deleted characters (the thread goes on to discuss
issues with implementations of Oracle, the database used by SWG).

Anyway, keep this in mind if you have any thoughts of deleting one of your
characters and warn others you care about. I'm really tempted to make more
editorial comments in line with my general sense of the magnitude of this
miserable launch and I continue to maintain that it sets new standards for a
bad launch. I don't recall anything like this happening in UO, EQ, AC, AO or
DAoC at launch, but maybe I just missed those? Un-fucking-believable.

And yes, I still play and I still enjoy the game and I will continue to log
in every day and play it. So why do I point awkward attention to the launch?
Because I'm fed up with the incessant "It's a MMOG, this is typical, get
over it, this isn't even that bad" crap. This is not, and should not be,
considered an acceptable status. I'm not advocating lawsuits and I'm not
willing to abandon playing the game. In my view the best recourse is to
continue to focus the embarassing, liberating spotlight of reality on all of
these issues and force SOE to take some public heat over this. I don't
believe that voting with my wallet is going to have any effect here, nor do
I care to deprive myself of the enjoyment I do get from the game. But I do
think the company needs to make a better effort at handling the many current
probems the game is facing. Being in the software business, it wouldn't
surprise me to learn that the Devs are pushing real hard for time and
resources to handle some of these problems, but are not being given those
resources by a reluctant management team that doesn't view the issues as
sufficiently serious. If that's the case, I'd like to help those devs by
keeping these problems in the spotlight. Change is only going to come about
as a result of continuing pressure arising out of an onslaught of negative
publicity. Either that or everyone stops buying. You tell me which is more
likely.

Considering that guy claims to be a huge SW fan, I don't think that's a real flattering review. Sounds like once you get past the "OMG cool, it's star wars!" phase there's very little to actually do in the game.

The lack of vehicles and space flight must suck. I didn't even know you could make a SW game without them...

Axecleaver

Might be fun in 6 months, but right now the list of cons is pretty all-inclusive:

QuoteCons: Bugs, bugs, and more bugs; poor customer service; premium price; bad controls; lack of content; imbalanced classes; creatures and quests.

Isn't that pretty much everything in an MMORPG? So are you having fun with it Tyddy?

Tydd

Yeah.  I'm enjoying it.  I'm able to look past the annoying bugs and enjoy what is there.  Like killing rebels.  :)

I've gotten in touch and am a member of a PA that is Human Imp only.  They are a group of Adults, sorry amb you wouldn't be able to join,  that met in the navy I guess.

Kirin

"in the naaaavy.."

Reinn

Hi! :)   I am gonna give SWG a shot I think.  Bought  game and loaded it but looks like I need to upgrade  graphics.  Gonna start out on the bria server.

Amberryl

Noreen

Caohmin
