I blame it all on "utilize." I defy you to give me an example where the word "utilize" is more appropriate than the word "use."

Axecleaver

Utilize can also mean "to make profitable use of; to use fully." So, for example, say I bought my Mom a new top of the line PC and she only uses it for email.

"My mother hasn't been able to utilize her new computer."

This isn't quite the same as "to use her new computer" because she can USE it, but she can't obtain FULL USE of it.

Sodom

Yeah, but nobody uses "utilize" that way. You hear "fully utilize," which I believe originated with the Department of Redundancy Department.

Legellyn

Isn't that where you work Sod?

Nari

All I know is that I see a lot of the word "utilize" when writing performance reports.  Something about that word just makes my senior management all quivery inside...

Sodom

There's definitely a hierarchy of management doublespeak lingo.

Bottom-rung managers get to use words like utilize
Middle management gets to use "quantify" and "metric"
Only the top folks get to use the cool phrases like "paradigm shift."

I was actually suprised when one of the officers had me retype an award for one of my folks.  He wanted the word 'used' instead of 'utilize' in the award citation.  Totally shocked me.
