The only thing that bugged me a little bit was that monsters also increased in difficulty as you levelled, so there was no chance to go back through easy areas and not have to fight tooth and nail all the way through.

Fallout was good, too. Maybe I should play something made in the last three years, though.
what's fallout like? i've never tried that one.
I ended up reading up on Fallout online, seems pretty cool. I went to eBay and picked up a combo pack for $20 that had Fallout, Fallout 2, and Fallout Tactics. Hopefully it shows up soon, I'm anxious to try it out.
I think Wasteland is find-able on the web as abandonware, though it has some annoying copy protection checks in the game.
Fallout was the sequel, made many years later. It lets you choose turn-based or realtime combat, though I always used turn based. The combat was a lot of fun. It gave characters with high INT more dialogue choices, so really dumb characters had a hard time talking their way through things, and made different builds viable and a truly different game experience. The game mechanics are really cool, I believe it's based on a Steve Jackson design or something. The main mission is timed, and events occur based on a clock, so if you dick around too much things can get a little screwy. Keep some old saves around.
Fallout 2 was a little too long for my tastes. I never finished it. Very buggy although I think the patches eventually resolved most problems. It suffered from a bit of an unfocused story line and I didn't enjoy it nearly as much as Fallout.
Fallout Tactics was basically tactical combat missions with a mercenary team, a la X-Com. Lot of fun although very time consuming to make any progress. I never got more than 10% of the way through it.
I bought most of these games for exorbitant release prices when they came out. What a sucker! I could've waited 10 years and got them all for $20.
Another tactical game I really liked was Jagged Alliance.
Thanks for the offer. I'm going to play the Fallout games and see how that goes. I may hit you up for it in a month or so. Just looking for something different to play for a bit.
In other news: Got the Age of Conan newsletter today. I'm itching to hook up with you guys in a new game.
in all seriousness though, I can't wait for that game. Last I heard they were still pushing for a late October release. Has anyone heard anything different recently?
3rd quarter was last I heard as well, but you know how these things go. I'd be happy if they got it out before year-end.

Pick Age of Conan from the drop-down box.
Played Bioshock for a couple of hours today (Xbox 360 version). The character customization that starts to open up after the first chapter is looking pretty cool: Multiple ammo types for each weapon, tons of "powers," and bunches of different trait modifications (I'm liking the ones that modify your ability to hack security systems and bots).
Really cool set-dressing, but level design really doesn't suggest a "city" that people would actually live in, per se. The "immersion" elements that System Shock pioneered, like journal entries, have been done in just about every single-player fps since, so nothing new there.
Overall, I'm having a blast at about 5 hours (or 2 chapters) in.
Also, the Big Daddies are cock diesel. Word is bond.
that reminds me of Planescape: Torment...different dialog options would appear depending on your INT, Alignment, Charisma, ect...really great game.
