He should have heard them laughing as they came over the hill. I would think that would have given him enough warning.

Hyena's run in packs Caohmin... So 1 would attack while the rest circle the prey and make laughing noises :)
Kirin did not notice the approaching hyenas because he is used to people laughing at him. As such, he ignored them until it was too late.
