Spent about 3 hours playing Doom 3 tonight. My god... it really is quite amazing, and I'm only playing it on Medium settings (there is high and super-high as well). The marine zombies are a pain in the ass, they work in pairs and try to cover and flank if they have enough room. It's pretty cool.
I keep delaying purchasing this game...but I have this really bad urge to buy it. I guess I'll probably cave in today so I can play it this weekend.
same here. A guy at work has it and it looks pretty sweet, although I'm looking forward more to Half Life 2 than I am to Doom 3.
Everyone I've talked to has said the sounds freak them out more than anything. Well, that and having to choose between a flashlight and a weapon, lol.
lol seriously... the fact that I can't see what I'm shooting at most of the time is pretty rough. They have also coded in a lot of cases where something engages you from in front, then another guy comes up behind you.
Normally when you get engaged from the front you would seek cover and return fire from there, but I think it's better to run up to and past the first one. Only problem is sometimes you end up in the middle of a whole bunch of guys.
One of the freakiest parts is walking into the bathroom and looking in the mirror. I was all fixated on the stalls knowing there's gotta be zombies in there. So there wasn't any, I turn around and look in the mirror and they run this 2-second cutscene of you looking in the mirror and getting freaked out. Nothing there. God damn that is some good game-making right there.
Ok...played a few hours and I must say this game creeps me out when there is no ambient lighting in my house...and I don't even have 3D sound...Very nice game. Wish I could run it to capacity.
I was handed a, uh, demo copy today at work, so I'll probably be immersing myself into digital hell tonight, hehe.
Demo, eh? LOL
Even on normal difficulty this game is freaking hard. If you don't shoot them in the head, it takes like 6 or 7 bullets just to take out one zombie.
The worst is the interrupt system. Have you gotten to the spiders yet? If they get up on you they interrupt your firing and you get zerged. Plus it's weird playing with collision detection again, lol.
I turned off autoreload and that helped a lot, otherwise if you run out of bullets you get locked into a reload sequence when switching weapons would have been better.
Getting hit is freaky, especially when you don't know where it's coming from. I got jumped by one of those fire-throwing demon things and it threw me back about 10 feet and made the screen kinda blurry. Scared the crap out of me.
If you're using the shotgun, you can fire it before it fully reloads if you have too. I think that's the only gun that does that though. I usually just hit the R key after every fight to make sure I don't run out.
I'm kind of disappointed in the PDA thing. I thought I'd be stealing security codes to unlock hidden areas or alternate paths; but so far it's just been weapon lockers full of pistol ammo.
pretty cool so far. I only played long enough to get past that big laser contraption where you have to crawl down the tunnel, but it's been fun.
I just got the chainsaw, roxors. I like how when you get a new weapon they give you a bunch of guys to try it out on. bzzz bbzzzzz
There's a lot of creepiness, the crying baby was super creepy.
Just picked up the rocket launcher, pretty solid. For those who are playing along at home, its a little bit after they give you the choice of obeying your commanding officer, or doing what the company man asks. I'm hoping that means they're at least 2 different endings.
As far as level design goes, I'm getting sick of entering a new area and immediately having to do a 180 and waste the guys that spawn behind you.
And too much shotty ammo. I have over 300 shotgun (and pistol) rounds and less that 100 left for all my other weapons. The shotty is nice early on, but its spread an ROF liabilies by the time you start fighting the skellies with rocket launchers.
No BFG 9000????
I saw the company bodyguard use the BFG...can't wait to pick it up.
I wonder if you could just use the chainsaw for everything.
I'm sure if you memorized all the mob animation, you could work it. It seems like if you hit them with it at a certain point in their animation, they never get a chance to hit back once you start 'sawing.
Fricking fly/flipper babies are scary.
i got the game before leaving and tried it out. i sintalled it at 2:30 AM and played for a few hours.. lights off, headset volume on loud.. good thing i didnt have the urge otherwise i would have gone back to preschool and shat my pants.. the lil cutscenes are awesome, like when that huge beast comes to break down the door and jumps in thru the window.
and yes.. the bathroom scene is a definate pants-shitter..
"a definate pants-shitter"
bro, you should trademark that or something, it's got the makings of the next "two thumbs up".
